Professor Somersalo named SIAM Fellow

The Department of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics is pleased to announce that the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the international flagship organization of applied mathematics, has nominated Professor Erkki Somersalo as a SIAM Fellow of 2026. This prestigious nomination is given to the selected few in recognition of their outstanding research and service to the community. Through their various contributions, SIAM Fellows form a crucial group of individuals helping to advance the fields of applied mathematics, computational science, and data science. The class of 2026 SIAM Fellows consists of 25 members of the international community of applied mathematicians.  They will be officially recognized during a reception at the 2026 SIAM Annual Meeting, which, by coincidence, takes place in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 2026. In the nomination letter, Professor Somersalo is being recognized for his “contributions in applied and computational mathematics, including electromagnetism,  Bayesian inverse problems, uncertainty quantification, data science, and mathematical modeling.” The applications that inspire Dr. Somersalo’s research range from engineering and biomedical applications to basic questions in the life sciences. He has coauthored six monographs and textbooks and over 150 articles. Dr. Somersalo is an elected member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, UK, and a Guggenheim Fellow.
