Letter from the Chair

Dear CWRU math, applied math and statistics alumni and friends,

The department has been conquering many challenges and thriving in recent years. The department faculty has received many prestigious awards including Dr. Somersalo’s Guggenheim fellowship and Dr. Calvetti’s SIAM fellowship. We have been recruiting new tenure track faculty (4 joined in Fall 2023 and an ongoing search). We are also working on re-open our PhD program in Statistics. We have more academic and social events running to keep faculty, students and staff close together. We have a math graduate student association (MGSA) and SIAM student chapter leadership who are dedicated to creating a welcoming community for our graduate students. We also offered some new graduate and undergraduate courses. We also created an Instagram page to share news of the department. We are grateful to our entire community of friends who continue to support the department with their time, treasure and talent.

Case Western Reserve University mathematician, researchers at Canada’s York University look at bacteria that may harm themselves just to get rid of freeloaders

Bacteria

An even more fascinating fact was discovered by a research team led by York University in Toronto, Canada, that explored bacteria’s quorum-sensing trait, a sophisticated form of co-operation, using which bacteria can regulate gene expression according to their population density.  The research team included co-author Peter Thomas, professor of mathematics at the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University.

Dr. Elisabeth Werner is a guest professor at RUB, Germany, summer 2022

Elisabeth Werner investigates the concept of the floating body in any dimensional space. In an interview, she explains the background and what brings her to the RUB.

A commonly encountered type of inverse problem is to estimate coefficient functions of a partial differential equation over a domain based on measurements of its solutions either inside or at the boundary of the domain.

CWRU Mathematics Professor Erkki Somersalo receives a Distinguished Research Award

During the opening event of Innovation Week, four faculty members were honored with Distinguished Research Awards. Among them was professor Erkki Somersalo, who has earned an international reputation as one of the pioneers of Bayesian inverse problems, and whose research breadth ranges from theoretical partial differential equations to statistical computations, usually motivated by a practical application.
