Letter from the Chair
Dear CWRU math, applied math and statistics alumni and friends,
The department has been conquering many challenges and thriving in recent years. The department faculty has received many prestigious awards including Dr. Somersalo’s Guggenheim fellowship and Dr. Calvetti’s SIAM fellowship. We have been recruiting new tenure track faculty (4 joined in Fall 2023 and an ongoing search). We are also working on re-open our PhD program in Statistics. We have more academic and social events running to keep faculty, students and staff close together. We have a math graduate student association (MGSA) and SIAM student chapter leadership who are dedicated to creating a welcoming community for our graduate students. We also offered some new graduate and undergraduate courses. We also created an Instagram page to share news of the department. We are grateful to our entire community of friends who continue to support the department with their time, treasure and talent.
After a few years of pandemic hiatus, the ASA DataFest was back at CWRU during the weekend of April 14 -16, 2023.
The first annual Elizabeth S. Meckes Memorial Lecture, “How to Bake Pi: Mathematics Made Tasty” was given by Dr. Eugenia Cheng on April 21, 2023.
On January 6, 2023 Dr. Peter Thomas was interviewed on Cleveland 19 news, where he was asked, “What would it cost you to make sure you win the Mega Millions jackpot.”
The Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Wanda Strychalski, and the Associate Chair, Dr. Nick Gurski, participated in the 2022 Field of Dream Conference (held on November 4-6, 2022) to introduce our Graduate Programs to participants.
On Friday, April 28, 2023, the university hosted the Academic Awards Assembly for continuing students at Amasa Stone Chapel. On Saturday, May 20, 2023, the Senior Academic Awards Assembly was held at Maltz Performing Arts Center.
Mercy Amankwah wins The 2023 SIAM Student Chapter Certificate of Recognition.
Stephanie Egler wins The 2023 Graduate Student Appreciation Award.
Clayton Coonrod wins The 2023 Graduate Dean’s Instructional Excellence Award.
MAMS department Statistics lecturer Paula FitzGibbon was selected as a 2023 recipient of the J. Bruce Jackson, MD, Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring.
On March 30, 2023, SIAM, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, announced that Daniela Calvetti, Williamson Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics at Case Western Reserve University, is a member of the 2023 Class of SIAM Fellows.
The MAMS department is very proud to announce that Mathematics Professor Dr. Erkki Somersalo has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for 2023.
The vision of the MDS3 COE is to develop, demonstrate, and deploy novel Data Science tools, frameworks, codes, and computing infrastructure to advance our understanding of Materials degradation and the failure of materials, components, and subsystems using novel computer science and data science while empowering current NNSA employees and delivering a pipeline of the diverse, data-enabled workforce for the future.
A commonly encountered type of inverse problem is to estimate coefficient functions of a partial differential equation over a domain based on measurements of its solutions either inside or at the boundary of the domain.
During the opening event of Innovation Week, four faculty members were honored with Distinguished Research Awards. Among them was professor Erkki Somersalo, who has earned an international reputation as one of the pioneers of Bayesian inverse problems, and whose research breadth ranges from theoretical partial differential equations to statistical computations, usually motivated by a practical application.
